In its newly announced Cyber Threat Status Report, STM scrutinized the "Cyber Resilience Regulation" that will affect companies exporting cyber security products from Turkey to European countries.
STM's Technological Thought Center "ThinkTech", which has undertaken important projects and domestic products in the field of cyber security in Turkey, announced its new Cyber Threat Status Report covering October-December 2023. In order to raise awareness in the field of cyber security, the report prepared by STM's cyber security experts has 8 different topics.
The report includes current and interesting topics such as the Cyber Resilience Regulation, which comes to the fore in increasing the resistance of organizations against cyber threats, cyber attacks on the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT, and the countries that commit the most cyber attacks worldwide.
The Cyber Resilience Regulation adopted by the European Commission is considered important to ensure the security of digital products produced as software and hardware. The obligations that this regulation will impose on countries are discussed in detail in the report. Accordingly, with the regulation coming into force, products entering the European markets will have to be cyber secure. When the regulation comes into force, hardware and software manufacturers will have to implement cyber security measures within the framework of the regulation throughout the entire life cycle of the product, from design to development, and only then will the products be able to take part in the European market.
Cyber Resilience Regulation Will Also Affect Turkish Companies
Among the obligations brought by the regulation for producers: There are topics such as documenting all security risks, reporting vulnerabilities and incidents, eliminating after-sales vulnerabilities, and providing clear and understandable instructions for product use. In case of non-compliance with the regulation, the surveillance authorities plan to eliminate the risk, withdraw the product from the market, impose a ban on access to the product and impose fines. The regulation will affect not only the European Union but also Turkish organizations that export their products to the member countries of the union. Once officially accepted in the European Union, digital product and hardware manufacturers, importers and distributors will be required to fulfill the relevant provisions within 36 months. The process will start in 2024.
Cyber Attacks on ChatGPT Continue
Cyber attacks against the recently popular artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT continue to increase. In the STM report, it was stated that ChatGPT experienced a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on November 8, 2023, and this was confirmed by the CEO of OpenAI. The attack was claimed by Anonymus Sudan, which has been using DDOS attacks in many countries since the beginning of 2023, exposing many websites or infrastructures to malicious traffic flow. In the report, STM also shared what needs to be done to protect against DDOS attacks.
Most Cyber Attacks Come from Russia and the USA
Data from STM's own Honeypot sensors; It also revealed the countries with the most cyber attacks worldwide. A total of 1 million 836 thousand attacks were recorded on STM's honeypot servers during October, November and December 2023. The country that made the most attacks was Russia with 227 thousand, while the USA ranked second with 141 thousand. These countries are respectively; Poland, Estonia, Ukraine, India, Vietnam, Singapore, Bulgaria and Iran followed.
Regarding the period of the report, the prominent questions in the STM Capture The Flag (CTF) 2023 competition, Turkey's longest-running cyber security competition, were analyzed.
